Elephant & Piggie Like to Read!

Though the Elephant & Piggie series is ending, the characters will continue to appear in a new early-reader series called “Elephant & Piggie Like Reading.” In these books, which will release in September with the same trim size and pagination as the Elephant & Piggie books, the pair of friends will introduce kids to their favorite books with story “bumpers” written by Willems. “The idea is that now that Elephant and Piggie are retired they are spending their time reading books by somebody else. So they introduce each book and at the end they comment on why they like it,” Willems said.

The Cookie Fiasco - Creating an introduction to the concepts of factors, fractions—and sharing—that's this much fun isn't easy, but Santat (The Adventures of Beekle) is more than up to the task. – Publisher’s Weekly

We Are Growing! - The underlying ideas—to stick to your strengths even when life (or a power mower) cuts you down, and that "We are all the something-est!"—are winners, much like the book itself. – Publishers Weekly

The Good for Nothing Button -  "It is a Good for NOTHING Button!" Yellow Bird's raging insistence inspires Red and Blue Bird to laugh and become happy, concluding that "the button can do EVERYTHING!" This story will be enjoyed by prereaders and by emerging and fluent readers alike and will support extension activities. VERDICT A valuable addition to beginning reader collections.—Laura Scott, Farmington Community Library, MI – School Library Journal

It’s Shoe Time! - …an exuberantly funny and surprisingly touching tale about what it means to be a pair…The silly, pun-filled text should keep young readers in stitches, but they may also ponder whether or not things need to look the same to belong together. Beneath its joyous surface, this book's sole—er, soul—runs deep. - The New York Times Book Review - Victoria Jamieson

The Itchy Book –  “Dinosaurs do not scratch alone.” It’s okay to itch after all! Writing exclusively in dialogue, Pham (the Vampirina Ballerina series) imbues her spreads with fizzy energy. – Publisher’s Weekly This book combines two of children's favorite fixations—"Elephant & Piggie" and dinosaurs—into a funny story that plays around with a relatable problem. – School Library Journal Starred Review

Harold & Hog - Piggie and elephant Gerald then open the cover of the book just as elephant Harold and Hog push it open from the inside, and the story seamlessly shifts to the latter pair's perspective. Harold and Hog—illustrated with depth and fairly realistically, compared to the cartoonlike Piggie and Gerald—are excited to see the famous duo, and Harold suggests they pretend to be them. Harold then produces round, wire-rimmed glasses for himself and a cartoon pig's snout for Hog so that they can pretend "for real." Unfortunately, Hog is "too CAREFUL to be Piggie," and Harold is "too CAREFREE to be Gerald!" The question then arises: Can Harold and Hog's friendship survive this game? Santat creates yet another early reader that is at once playful, self-aware, and perceptive in its exploration of the differences of personalities and the complications (or simplicities) of friendship. – Kirkus Starred Review
